Latin Heat Finish 13th Overall in ASA National
Heat rally to place the highest
of all California “C” Teams
September 03, 2006
LATIN HEAT capped off the 2006 season having completed one of two lofty goals the team aspired to. At the beginning of the 2006 season, the team set 2 goals:
1. Win the Southern California ASA Alliance “C” Tournament Series
2. Win the ASA “C” Nationals
The HEAT departed for Atlanta, GA on August 29, 2006 as the Southern California ASA Alliance Tournament Champions and their sights set on the only remaining objective: ASA “C” National Championship. The HEAT were joined in representing the state of California by:
- Bay Area High Reach (Dublin)
- Braves (Oroville)
- Mixed Company (Fresno)
- Silver Hawks (Bakersfield)
- So. Cal. Hustlers (Anaheim)
Thursday, August 31, 2006:
All teams opened play on Thursday, August 31, 2006. The HEAT drew the Malcolm A’s from Meyersville, NJ.
Game 1: HEAT (10) – Malcolm A’s (2):
The HEAT started the ASA National Tournament as they had many games during the season. Lead-off man Martin Borgen started the day in usual fashion with a lead-off walk. Number 2 hitter Ned Waters pressured the opposing pitcher in a hard fought at-bat that forced multiple pitches including 2 wild pitches that allowed Borgen to reach third. The work of the dynamic duo got the HEAT out of the chute with an early 1-run lead. Malcolm A’s responded with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, but it was all HEAT after that.
The entire offense plugged away and came through with timely hits. The exclamation point came off the bat of Mario Ramirez in the top of the 4th inning when he hit a 2-run HR blast to left-center. Pitcher Cecilio Smalling earned the win for the HEAT in Game 1, striking out 5 batters and scattering 8 hits over 6 innings while allowing only 2 runs.

Game 2: HEAT (13) – Diamondbacks (15):
Game 2 pitted the HEAT against the Diamondbacks from Ephrata, PA. LATIN HEAT started newcomer Arturo Cooper. The Diamondbacks pounced on the new HEAT pitcher posting 8 runs in 1⅓ innings. Cecilio Smalling entered the game in the top of the 2nd to close out the inning and complete the game.
The HEAT bats continued to rebound and close the gap. In the bottom half of the 1st inning down by 4, the HEAT drove in 3 runs. In the 2nd inning, the Diamondbacks put another 4 on the board and the HEAT plated 6 to take the lead 9-8. This see-saw battle continued until the final frame with the HEAT coming up 2 runs short in the end.
HEAT bats were led by Martin Borgen (3-4, HR, 3R, 4RBI), Mario Ramsey (3-4, HR, R, 3RBI), and Martin Joiner (2-4, 2R, 4RBI). The trio combined to knock in 11 of the team’s 13 runs. Despite an excellent team performance at the plate, the HEAT absorbed the loss and were sent into the National Tournament Loser’s Bracket.

Game 3: HEAT (8) – Sports Club(5):
Game 3 represented a “do-or-die” situation for the HEAT. Their opponent, Sports Club from Hoboken, NJ, had one of the most talented teams in the tournament and arguably the strongest pitcher from opposing line-ups. The HEAT would have to continue scraping away if they were to keep their tournament hopes alive. |
Sports Club jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of 1st, but gave the run back as an error allowed Ned Waters to score and tie the game. Sports Club added another run in the top of the 3rd, but when the Sports Club RF misplayed a bloop single from Lenny Molina, the HEAT were again in scoring position. Martin Borgen promptly made them pay for the error with an RBI single.
Sports Club added another run in the top of the 5th, but again the HEAT came back. To lead off the inning, David Carrillo hit a HR to deep left-center. The solo shot was followed by back-to-back singles from Martin Joiner and Mario Ramsey. Shaky defense again proved to hurt Sports Club as an error by the SS plated 2 more HEAT runs. Peetie Bodan finished off the high-scoring 5th inning with an RBI single and the HEAT led 7-3.
In the bottom of the 6th, Carrillo added a little more cushion to the lead with a HR to CF and the HEAT cruised in the final frame to close out Sports Club. Cecilio Smalling earned his 2nd complete-game win of the tournament as he held a great hitting Sports Club teamto 5 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits.

Game 4: HEAT (1) – Memphis Dawgs (12):
Saturday’s games represented the final 16 teams from a field of 42 teams. The HEAT stood as the lone California team remaining in competition. Unfortunately, there would be no storybook ending for the HEAT as they fell in poor form to the Memphis Dawgs from where else but Memphis, TN.
The HEAT again handed the ball to newcomer Arturo Cooper, who held the Dawgs scoreless through 3 innings. The Dawgs offense came alive; however, in the 4th inning and plated 5 runs. 2 more runs would score in the 5th when Sonny Draughan was brought in relief. Draughan retired the 1st 3 batters he faced, but the Dawgs offense ultimately got the best of the HEAT in a 12-1 rout.
The lone bright spot of the day was a Peetie Bodan opposite field HR to lead off the 3rd inning. The loss ended the HEAT tournament.

The HEAT will focus on maintaining the fundamentals that brought them to the 2006 National Tournament. There are several independent tournaments where the HEAT will develop some of their younger talent to gear up for another run at the 2007 National Championship Crown.
